DIM: Chunky Funnel Neck Sweater

No typo in the title: rather than DIY this chunky funnel neck sweater, it’s Did It Myself.

The reason why is because I sort of “winged it” while knitting, rather than follow a pattern. If you’re interested in a pattern, I can certainly update the post with what I did, but I’m not 100% happy with some of it, particularly the sleeves. Overall I’m really happy with how it turned out, I just felt the sleeves could have been better, and I wouldn’t want another person to be unhappy with it!

For this project I looked to Wool and the Gang’s Wonderwool Sweater pattern (available for free when you sign up) and I Love Mittens’ jumper as inspiration. I used almost 6 balls of Wool and the Gang‘s Crazy Sexy Wool in Space Black (bought from the Love Knitting website).

The last few days in Sydney had been particularly brisk, but the day I decided to take photos for the blog it actually turned out to be quite warm. Never mind, I sweated it out for the sake of fashion.

The sweater knitted up pretty quickly. I used 10mm needles for the ribbing and 12mm for the body, arms and funnel neck. The yarn itself is lovely and soft, and once it’s all pieced together makes for a heavy yet snuggly sweater for winter.

I mentioned previously on the blog that I had been shying away from wearing all black, but I really wanted to do this project in black yarn, mainly because I knew I wanted to worn on my own pattern (ish) and thought the black would hide any imperfections.

Other than the sleeves which had a weird shape after being seamed I’m really happy with how it turned out. Maybe a few more tries with an actual pattern written by someone else before I start experimenting with my own!

  • It looks awesome! I wouldn’t be able to do anything like this even with following a pattern exactly, so you should be very proud. So nice and cosy for winter 🙂

    • Thank you Mica! Other than the sleeve issue I am pretty happy with it 🙂 It’s perfect for the chilly Sydney days 😀
