Out of all the items in my essentials capsule, I think the white button down shirt is my absolute favourite. This is a big call, coming from someone who would live in jeans if I had the chance, but nothing beats the simplicity and versatility of this classic piece of clothing.
I was inspired by the Equipment silk shirts popping up on style blogs, but unfortunately the wallet doesn’t stretch that far, so compromised with a local brand at a third of the price. The blouse I have here is from David Lawrence, and while it is certainly more than what I would normally pay for a simple white shirt it is definitely worth the investment – I figured that it is one item that would be worn so many times that the cost-per-wear actually makes it quite affordable.
The silk fabric feels much more luxe in this style, and doesn’t get as creased – a bonus for the iron-phobic in me. Of course, the only downside is that it does need a little bit more TLC than a regular cotton shirt, but in doing so I think it would last longer and keeps it shape more than the latter. I also don’t care much for button tabs on the sleeves for when you roll them, I’ve always thought they were a bit naf, but for this particular shirt it’s actually pretty useful as the silk doesn’t fold as crisply so needs a little support for when you want to roll them up a la Jenna Lyons.
For a casual day in the office, I wore it under a Folded and Hung sleeveless jacket (bought while on holiday in the Philippines), which gave it an extra element of interest, along with a pair of Rollas jeans and my ever faithful Office leopard flats. The fact that the white button down pairs with a blue jeans just as easily as it does under a sharp suit set is testament to how versatile it is, and as such investing in a quality one is worth considering.
