I have a confession to make.
I bought a few things during my self-imposed ban on shopping.
If you read my earlier post on the rules of my capsule wardrobe challenge, one of them was not to buy anything until I had planned my winter capsule when I knew what I needed to complete it.
Ever since I wore the H&M black pants gifted by my mum (the last time was in this post), I had been very unhappy with them. I found that they made my legs look dumpy and was generally very unflattering for my body. I suppose it’s to be expected when I didn’t actually try these pants on myself, and I had to do some alterations to the hems to make them the correct length (which inadvertently affected the shape of the pant leg – ladies, leave such alterations to the professionals, trust me!). But these were the only black pants in my wardrobe (my essentials capsule, no less) and I needed them for work, especially with the weather turning colder.
So I swallowed my pride and bought these pants from Marcs.
But can I also tell you how happy I am with these pants?
1. They were the right length which meant no funky hemming or alterations required.
2. They’re not made of cheapy jersey/ponte type fabric like H&M pants were – they’re a bit more rigid – so they’re more flattering for my legs.
3. Did I mention no hemming was required?
The other issue I had was my favourite pair of Office leopard flats. These were bought in London a couple of years ago and we’ve been faithful companions since then.
Until last week.
I wore them after a long day of walking and my feet were killing me. Blisters galore. The inner sole was coming away, and the piping detail was beginning to wear away. I tried wearing them again on Monday and my feet screamed in pain.
So I went to Sportsgirl and bought a pair of leopard, animal-print pointy toe lace up flats that I had spied when I was looking for the above black pants. And I’m pleased to say that (bar a bit of rubbing on the Achilles tendon) after 6 hours of on-and-off standing today and some walking these shoes stayed pretty comfy.
For today’s work outfit I chose the mustard button up, sleeveless shirt from my autumn capsule to go with my new pants and shoes. I would normally wear a belt with this kind of outfit to cinch in the waist; I decided to skip it given the pants were still snug being so new, but the outfit needed that third element so I decided to go with a statement bib necklace which Mr 1 loves to put in his mouth.
As I leave for work quite early in the morning, I wore the denim jacket to keep the chill out.
Another confession: I made the mistake of going into Witchery to find black pants and instead saw these, at 25% off:
I mentioned before how I had seen animal print Stan Smiths on Instagram and had fallen hard for them. Ever since then I’ve been trawling every site possible that sold these elusive Stan Smiths. So when I saw the above pair in Witchery I’m pretty sure I was hyperventilating. I didn’t even think about my shopping ban and snapped these up without a second thought.
So I’m sorry folks, for breaking my shopping ban. I hope I can stay on track for the next two months and not buy anything else. I’ll try to stick to coffee and ice cream instead.
