Do you remember back in the late 90s when wearing skirts over pants or jeans was a trend?
Yeah, like this:
I was a fan of this look and would wear a random black skirt I had over jeans or pants. I cringe thinking about it now, but it was the done thing back then and at least I can say I gave it a good go.
While the current trend is about wearing a dress over pants, it’s still the principle of wearing something over the pants that can be a little unnerving. I mean, pants in themselves are enough, yes? (Obviously with some sort of top.) But if you look at cultures the world over, wearing something long over pants is pretty common, and they’re not even making a style statement out of it. And it’s men doing it. Wearing a skirt- or dress-like garment over pants is just the done thing.
So with that out of the way, here’s my only dress in my autumn capsule with a pair of white jeans.
I’d been wanting to try this out for a while now, ever since I saw Angie from Reasons to Dress rocking the dress-over-pants look. Yesterday was the perfect opportunity to try it out as it was a pretty dreary day in Sydney and the extra layer underneath the dress was welcome.
The trick to wearing a dress over pants is that the dress shouldn’t be too fitted – it should be a relaxed fit dress; something like a tunic dress would be perfect. This trend could be potentially overwhelming for petites so a monochromatic look (ie the dress and pants being the same colour) could help lengthen the body. I also think straight leg or slim fit jeans or trousers would be best for this trend, as the combination of a loose fit dress and loose fit pants would drown us petites (if you’re the willowy type, you’d probably be able to get away with it).
The relaxed fit dress is also important as it means you could also wear it as a loose fit top by tucking it into the pants if the dress-over-pants is too tricky a trend to try out. Any other type of dress may not work being tucked in; the exception would be the button up shirt dress, which lends itself perfectly to this trend, either as a dress over the pants or tucked into them.
What do you think of the dress-over-pants trend?
