Outfits and Style, Style Challenge

Week 1 of the #5feetofstyle wardrobechallenge

The first 7 days of my style challenge are done! Here’s what I wore in the first week.

In case you missed it, here’s the post about my style challenge for the month of June, as well as the prompts for each day.

I also came across the #winterstylefile style challenge on Instagram through @teamstylefile, which also looked fun! While I’ll be doing the #5feetofstylewardrobechallenge every day, I’ll probably pop in and out of the #winterstylefile one now and again.

Day 1

I had planned to take some photos for this blog post that day so the jumper from Zaful met the prompts for both style challenges perfectly. I also had a few admin things to take care of that day, so some comfy jeans and shoes were needed.

I mentioned how red and pink are a great combo in my previous post, and red and black is a classic too. I love how the tan accessories work with this colour combination.

Shoes from Dune London (old) | Vintage bag from Surry Hills Market

Day 2

Saturday mornings are hectic so I needed an easy outfit to run around with all the activities we have scheduled. To meet the “mix at least two textures prompt” for my own style challenge I wore a leather jacket and knit scarf (it’s getting so cold now!), over a chambray shirt and ripped jeans for the #doubledenim prompt of the #winterstylefile challenge. Bub in her fluffy jacket and crocheted beanie also made a nice texture mix.

I love this leather jacket but it’s a little tight with breastfeeding boobs – scarves are definitely going to be my best friend when wearing this.

Jeans: BlankNYC, old | Shoes: Adidas Stan Smiths

Day 3

I went oversized for today’s “go big or go home” challenge by borrowing one of hubby’s shirts and pairing it with some pleated culottes. I tied the shirt at the waist for the Winter Style File prompt #knottietuck.

At first I was a little apprehensive with the idea of wearing two or more oversized items, but I actually ended up liking this combination. The trick is to not make it too ridiculously oversized so that it swamps my small stature – for example, hubby’s shirt wasn’t massive, but big enough to show that it wasn’t slim fitting like regular women’s shirts, and the culottes weren’t excessively wide.

Day 4

My challenge today was to “try a boyish look” which wasn’t all that hard, given that most of the time my outfits are a little boyish anyway! I went with a thrifted Saba blazer which I was considering selling as I didn’t think I’d be wearing it much being off work for a while – but was great for today’s outfit! My jeans were also perfect for the boyish look, as they were a men’s pair of J Brand Kane jeans before I hacked the hems off the bottom to fit me.

A few days before the challenge I popped into a nearby Vinnies store looking for some inspiration, and was very happy to find this pair of barely worn black Converse Chuck Taylors in my size. This almost never happens! I snapped them up in an instant, and wore them with this outfit to complete the boyish look.

Day 5

The heavens opened up in Sydney today so just really wanted a comfortable outfit to hustle the kids in and out of the house for pre-school and school. The outfit wasn’t anything to write home about but I did change my Mimco bag from the day before to my beloved Whistles backpack to meet the prompt “change out your handbag”. It was actually a good move given that at one point I had to wrangle the baby, the 3 year old, and associated bags along with an umbrella.

It was also World Environment Day so I brought along my Barista Buddy to save on a disposable cup!

Day 6

“Wear the item you’ve been ‘saving’ for a special occasion” would apply to a lot of my clothes as breastfeeding means I can’t wear a lot of them! I chose to wear this Cecilie Copenhagen one though as I’d been missing it, but quickly remembered why I only wore it on special occasions – the threads snagged on my watch whilst putting Bub into her car seat. It’s such a beautiful garment but so, so delicate!

I also wore my lace up ballet flats to meet the prompt – they take so long to put on, which is not so parent-friendly when you have to rush out of the door, making them “special occasion” shoes! I do love them so much though, I’d love to wear them more often if they were slip on lace ups. Is that even a thing?

Day 7

Still wet and chilly today so my Wool and the Gang Mohair Cardigan was perfect to keep warm. The only thing about this cardigan that it sheds soooo much – I find Bub’s hands covered in hairs after carrying her while I’m wearing this.

Today’s challenge prompt was “focus on jewellery”, which also coincided with the Winter Style Files #stylefilePEARL prompt which gave me the idea of stacking a pearl necklace given to me by hubby, with the very first piece of jewellery he ever gave me. I haven’t worn them much but it was nice to pull it out and remember those early days of just us.

Thoughts so far

One style challenge can be difficult but doing two at the same time is even trickier! What I do like is being able to plan my outfits, even if a little haphazardly, the night before, knowing that I have the prompt/s to meet. It also gives me the opportunity to try different combos that I probably wouldn’t consider, like the red/black/tan from Day 1 or the oversized proportions in Day 2. So far though the outfits haven’t strayed too far from my comfort zone, so it’s been relatively easy to do, even with two style challenges at the same time!

  2. It’s such a fun challenge! I’m kinda trying to do them both, but not worrying too much if I can’t do either. It’s nice to think of some new outfit combinations, and try different things with what you already own 🙂

Hope that you are having a wonderful weekend 🙂 We had a birthday party yesterday so today is just relaxing and recovering from that, ha!

    1. Thanks Mica! So far the challenge has been relatively easy – nothing too dramatic in terms of outfit combinations 😀

Hope you had a lovely weekend celebrating your boy’s birthday! I remember it wasn’t so long ago you had 2 under 2!! Time goes so fast when you’re not getting much sleep 😉
