5 Ways to Wear a Chunky Knit Cardigan

With the cold settling in here in Perth, a chunky knit cardigan is one of my closet staples! Here’s 5 ways I’ve styled it.

This is the first in a few posts where I share 5 ways of styling a key piece in my wardrobe, with some outfits my favourites and others an experiment to see how it looks. I often find myself wearing an item the same way, with the same items, and while that’s all well and good it can be a little boring so experimenting with other items in my wardrobe lets me see if it fits in with my style and my lifestyle.

The first in this series is my trusty chunky knit cardigan. If you’be been following on my blog now you’ll notice I do love a good chunky knit, especially if I’ve knitted it myself (see here, here, here… yes I do love them so). I whipped up another white one just before the winter hit here in Perth and it’s been a workhorse item over these cold weeks.

The way I mainly wear my chunky knit cardigan is basically like a coat. It’s so warm and snuggly that it can almost replace a coat, and with the winter here being relatively mild compared to Sydney and Melbourne a coat almost isn’t necessary so it’s nice to have this knit as a coat-like layer. It’s also nice to have as a cover up for those days when it’s a little warmer but the wind has a bite to it, or when it gets cool in the evenings – it being made of wool, I find I don’t start sweating in it as soon as I put it on.

Below I’m sharing 5 ways to wear the cardigan – some are tried and true outfits, others more to see how it works in these combos! Throughout these outfits I’m wearing a cardigan made with We Are Knitters The Wool in Natural, with the pattern by Ophelie Guerville. Anything bought second hand will be noted with an asterisk (*).

Outfit #1: Chunky Knit Cardigan + Long Sleeve Shirt + Jeans + Boots

Wearing: Saint James Minquiers Modern Breton Striped T-Shirt (similar) | Citizens of Humanity Rocket Jeans (*thrifted) | Seed Heritage Tan Suede Boots (similar)

This is the most common way I wear this cardigan in winter. It’s a failsafe formula and works on the days when it’s cold and I’m running late to do the school run in the mornings. The only thing that changes is the wash of the jeans.

Outfit #2: Chunky Knit Cardigan + Tee + Denim Shorts + Short Ankle Boots

Wearing: The Bee and the Fox “Mamacita” tee (*from clothes swap) – similar | Wrangler denim shorts (*from clothes swap) – similar | Nine West suede ankle boots (*from clothes swap) – similar | Lack of Color Boater Hat (*from Depop)

This outfit would be good in the early spring months when the days are warmer but the evenings are cooler, or when the cold wind suddenly springs up during the day. I like the white on white with the tee, and the pale denim shorts goes with the theme of lightness and brightness, but I feel the boots are bit too heavy for this combination, and the foldover detail just shortens my legs even more. Fine if you’re over 5’6″ though when there’s enough length between the light and dark. I think some nude sandals would work better here for me.

Outfit #3: Chunky Knit Cardigan + Tank + Leopard Satin Skirt + Sneakers

Wearing: Zara tank (similar) | Stellino leopard skirt (similar) | Converse low sneakers (*thrifted)

I’ve worn the tank, skirt and sneakers together before but never with the cardigan, mainly because it was too hot at the time and I hadn’t even made the cardigan yet. I like this combination – the texture of the knit and the leopard print go nicely together, and the slouchiness of the cardigan is a nice contrast to the slim fit of the skirt. Good for a cool spring day.

Outfit #4: Chunky Knit Cardigan + Summer Dress + Dad Sneakers

Wearing: Cotton On dress (similar) | Adidas x Kylie Jenner Falcon sneakers (*bought from Facebook marketplace)

I’m not entirely convinced about this combo – although I must admit it may be to do more with my self-confidence than anything else, and I’ve never been entirely sure about this dress. I absolutely love these Dad sneakers but somehow they don’t work so well with this particular dress. Or maybe they do and I’m just not feeling it because I haven’t worn this dress, indeed any dress, for ages. What do you think?

Outfit #5: Chunky Knit Cardigan + Lace Top + Leopard Print Pants + Loafers

Wearing: Zara lace top (similar) | H&M leopard leggings (similar) | Witchery black leather loafers (*bought from Carousell) – similar

Texture AND broderie anglaise AND leopard print all together? A big yes for me. While there are three different details in this outfit, it’s all kept tonal and therefore minimalist in that respect. I kept it simple with the shoes because there was enough happening above.

Love the idea of wearing a chunky knit cardigan 5+ ways? Any of these would work nicely in the above outfits (and more)!

Which outfit(s) did you like/not like? What other ways would you wear a chunky knit cardigan through the year? Let me know!

  1. You wear cardis so well! I really need to wear mine more often, although I don’t have many cute chunky knit ones like this!

I really like it with the dress – although I’m not a fan of the dad sneaker trend I think the cardi and dress look wonderful together! 🙂

    1. Ah thank you! Yes I think the dress would work better with a different pair of shoes… the Dad sneaker doesn’t quite work with the dress right? I also had a daggy mum bun in my hair so a better hairstyle is probably in order haha!
