Life with Kids: Neighbourhood Christmas Lights

Neighbourhood Christmas lights are such a fun way for kids to ring in and celebrate the festive season!

Ever since we had our first born we’ve gone to the Christmas lights in our area every year. We’re lucky to live fairly close to some of the best streets in Sydney for Christmas lights, so it’s not too hard for us to get to. It’s a much easier and cheaper option to go to these lights than the ones in the city… parking for one is a heck of a lot easier, although with the growing popularity of neighbourhood lights you do have to arrive early for a parking spot.

I’m always a bit of a grinch about the lights to start off with… “it’s too close to the your bedtime / you’re too tired to enjoy them / they don’t come on til late / I just want to collapse in front of the TV with a glass of wine” etc etc. However, like I said above, the lights aren’t too far from where we live and once we’re out and the kids gawp in awe at the displays I’m glad we made the effort to see them (even if they are a bit of a wreck afterwards).

There are 2 main streets we go to see, and each year the houses on these streets do a spectacular display. This year one of the houses pulled out their train set, with Mr 3 couldn’t get enough of.

The streets who participate in Christmas lights use their popularity as an opportunity to collect donations for the local children’s hospitals. It’s a small price to pay to see incredible efforts made by these neighbourhoods to put on their lights.

On one particular street one of the locals comes out dressed as Santa and has a little seat for photo opportunities for the visiting kids (and young-at-hearts). I’m always amazed by the generosity of these people to give their time and warmth to strangers.

A quick Google search shows pretty comprehensive lists of the streets and areas that participate in Christmas lights displays, otherwise the local mums’ groups or parents’ groups are an incredible wealth of information on such things. Seriously, the collective knowledge of the mums’ group I’m a member of on Facebook is unmatched – they know everything there is to know about the area.

Will you be visiting local Christmas lights this year?

  1. We love to see the Christmas lights each year, but I’m not sure where we will go this year! Over the years all our favourite streets have had less and less people taking part, it’s hard to find a good couple of streets to make the most of that time before dinner and bed before everyone is too overtired, haha!

    1. Oh that’s a shame! It’s a fair bit of effort to get the lights set up so I understand why some people would choose to not participate anymore. The lights here are so popular that Mr Whippy vans are set up for every night the lights are on, haha!
