My latest sneaker obsession is kind of ugly-pretty.
I remember when the Dad sneaker trend came out – what, 12 or so months ago? – I was horrified by how terribly ugly, how very 90s, it all was. Even the Balenciaga Triple S versions that I saw everywhere street style blogs wasn’t enough to convince me.
However, a discussion on one of the Facebook groups I’m a member of got me rethinking the trend. Someone had recently bought a pair of Adidas Yung-1s and wanted some outfit ideas beyond activewear on how to wear it. As the members of this group are pretty stylish I followed along with interest, and was surprised by how well these ladies wore their Dad sneakers with skirts, trousers and dresses.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think some of the shoes out there are still pretty damn ugly, I have to say. But I became obsessed with one particular pair, Kylie Jenner’s Adidas Falcons.
While still being a chunky shoe, it’s nowhere near as chunky as the Triple S shoes or other ones on the market. The colours are also pretty cute – I like the black and pink pair, and the other colour combinations are quirky too. What got me more interested in the Falcons though is that even though they’re mainly a fashion sneaker, you could probably get away with doing a decent workout in them too, whereas with other Dad sneakers you probably wouldn’t wear them anywhere near a gym. Basically the Falcons could still be worn when the Dad sneaker trend eventually dies out.
I was super lucky to nab a pair in my preferred colour combination (crystal white and navy) second hand off Facebook Marketplace – I had to contact someone in Melbourne to get them, but the seller was lovely and sent the shoes off without delay. So now that I have a pair of these, I’m after ideas on how to wear them beyond activewear, like the Facebook group discussion I mentioned above.

Below I’ve rounded up some high street and high end options should you wish to add a pair of Dad sneakers to your sneaker repertoire!
How do you feel about Dad sneakers? Are they a yay or nay for you? I’d love to know!
PS I’m still in the throes of a pretty bad case of flu so have stepped away a bit from blogging and social media… this is the first in a few days I’ve actually been able to sit upright!
