An easy project to jazz up your child’s (or your own!) plain t-shirt with some sew on gems.
It’s been so long since I’ve done a DIY project, but in all honesty I don’t have much time or energy these days to commit to a project. Anything I can do sitting down and within one episode of a TV show it all I can do now!
I may have mentioned in the past that where my own style leans towards minimalist details, my 4 year old just loves anything bling-y and shiny. Sequins, jewels and sparkles are what make her heart sing.
So when her grandma (with all good intentions) bought her a plain purple t-shirt, Miss 4 was a bit iffy about it.
I guess there weren’t enough details or embellishments. I already had some sew on gems from a previous DIY project I had done some time ago but hadn’t used, so it was a good opportunity to use them up and give the t-shirt a bit of personality. Here’s how I did it, and it could certainly be done on an adult’s plain t-shirt too (if so inclined!).
- 1 plain t-shirt
- Sew-on gems
- Sewing needle
- Thread (preferably the same colour as the t-shirt)
- Optional fabric glue
- Optional embroidery hoop
1. If using the embroidery hoop, use it to keep the fabric of the t-shirt taut as you sew the gems on.
2. If using fabric glue, you could use it to secure the gems on first and then use the thread and sewing needle to secure them. I didn’t want to use glue but simply sewed the gems straight onto the shirt.
3. You could arrange the gems in a pattern but I liked the randomness of the placement. Continue gluing and/or sewing the gems around the neckline.
4. And it’s done!
Of course, if you only sewed the gems on you could always revert it back to a plain t-shirt if need be.
Miss 4 LOVED the gems, and I quite liked the faux necklace effect it gave to the tee.
If you have a child who’s into jewels and gems as much as my daughter (or it may even be yourself?!), why not try embellishing the neckline of your t-shirt for a simple DIY to express this?
